Recording King RM-991-S Tricone Square-Neck Resonator Guitar

The Recording King RM-991 has been based on the legendary Tricone. Produced by renowned makers, National, at the close of the 1920s, the Tricone was the first resonator guitar designed for big volume. The now, somewhat familiar, body shape has been devised to give this instrument enough presence to compete with the brass and percussion sections. This ode to an innovator of a guitar still comes with that unmistakable, nicely 'hard' sound, complete with the long sustain and brilliantly rich overtones so loved by Bluegrass musicians for more than a century, and Delta blues guitarists will naturally fall in love with what this resonator can do when played with a slide. While the sound is on point, the vintage styling of this homage to music history is not only accurate, but brilliantly authentic.

The Recording King RM-991: The Tricone-Style Resonance Chamber

The core of the Recording King RM-991-S is made up of its three cones - hence the name, Tricone. Since the bridge is mounted at the centre of the three 6-inch cones via a special T-bar, the string vibrations are evenly spread across the entire resonance chamber to increase the volume as much as possible. Two of the cones are fitted below the unwound strings, and the third is mounted on the opposite side to give the Tricone its outstanding and naturally equalised tonal balance, enveloping warm sound and incredible level of projection. The chrome-plated brass body is also finished with two grille-formed sound-holes while the cones have gauze-protected sound holes.

Squareneck Resonator Comfort

Since this is a Squareneck resonator, it can be played on the lap or on a table. The neck has been made using Honduras mahogany; a much-loved wood when it comes to building great resonators that lends a distinct and beautifully sweet accent. The ebony and maple bridge meanwhile, ensures that the notes are kept tight and transparent, while a hand rest covers both the bridge and strings, providing comfort for the playing hand without dampening any strings. A set of high-grade open-gear machine heads have been fitted and a vintage-style Recording King logo finishes both the headstock and a sensitively built resonator guitar.
